Why It Matters

Modern infrastructure runs on precision time and position signals provided by GPS: 5G networks synchronize to it, aviation and maritime navigate by it, financial systems timestamp trades against it, military systems rely on it to defend the nation. The reliability of GPS is being threatened by an unprecedented increase in jamming and spoofing, there are almost no backups.

GNSS signals are weak by design: easy to jam or spoof, easy to lose under foliage, indoors, or between buildings. Geometry compounds it. GPS orbits were chosen in the 1970s, and no GPS satellite ever passes overhead above 55° latitude; just as melting ice opens the Arctic to shipping, patrol, and survey traffic, the region gets the worst geometry GPS has to offer. Every constellation occupies a single orbital shell, so coverage thins wherever only a narrow slice of sky is visible. And because GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, and BeiDou all broadcast in the same frequency band, adding constellations doesn't add independence. One band, one orbital regime, nothing to cross-check against.

From there, you subscribe to Lightyear and receive an access key that grants access to the signal.

Executive Order 13905 named GNSS dependence a national resilience risk, and the federal response has been to pursue resilience in layers rather than a single GPS replacement. Lightyear is built to be one of those layers, an independent signal from orbit.
